Common shorthand for bacteriostatic water
‘BAC’ is the standard research-community shorthand for bacteriostatic water. When a protocol says ‘reconstitute with 2 mL BAC,’ it means 2 mL of bacteriostatic water — sterile water for injection plus 0.9% benzyl alcohol preservative.
The shorthand collides with other ‘BAC’ terms in unrelated fields (blood alcohol concentration, bacterial artificial chromosome) but in peptide research the meaning is unambiguous from context.
Always verify the diluent label before reconstitution: ‘sterile water for injection’ without ‘bacteriostatic’ on the label is the non-preserved variant and changes the post-reconstitution stability window.
