Scientific Overview
Exenatide is a 39-aa synthetic version of exendin-4 from Heloderma suspectum (Gila monster) saliva. It was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist FDA-approved (Byetta, 2005, Amylin/Lilly), with a microsphere weekly formulation Bydureon following in 2012. Largely displaced by liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide.
